A Country Inspired Maternity Session for Candace Kanavel, Former Miss Arizona USA

There is something extra magical about a maternity session when the mama-to-be is your own sister. This shoot was incredibly close to my heart, not just because it’s family, but because we are currently walking this journey side-by-side. Candace and I are welcoming our babies just three weeks apart! While this is my third child, it is her first biological baby, and sharing this experience has been the gift of a lifetime.

If she looks familiar, it’s likely because she’s used to the spotlight—my sister is former Miss Arizona USA, Candace Kanavel. But on this gorgeous evening, the only title that mattered was “Mom.”

For their session, Candace and her husband, Sean, leaned into their Arizona home base with some perfectly curated country-inspired maternity photos. They proved that maternity style doesn’t always have to be flowing silk gowns; sometimes, it’s all about the denim.

Golden Hour Amongst the Cacti

We headed to an open field in the desert right near their home. As an Arizona motherhood and family photographer, I’m constantly inspired by the local landscape, but this evening was truly special. The Arizona desert put on a show with a soft, amber glow that settled over the cacti and creosote.

There is a unique stillness in the desert at sunset. Amidst the saguaros, we captured portraits that felt grounded and full of anticipation. Watching Sean and Candace together, knowing their little one will grow up under these wide Arizona skies, was a moment I’ll never forget.

Sharing this pregnancy with my sister has been a whirlwind of joy. Capturing her as she transitions from her legacy as former Miss Arizona USA into this new chapter of motherhood is a memory I will cherish forever.
