There is a common misconception that winter in Northern California means gray skies and rain. But as a bay area maternity photographer, I’ll let you in on a little secret: winter is often when we find our most breathtaking, golden light.

Melanie and Ryan’s recent maternity session was the perfect example of this. We headed to the iconic black sand beach (located near the ruggedly beautiful Marin Headlands), and the afternoon was pristine. We were lucky the road to the beach was open for access because often, it’s not! While the rest of the country was bundling up, we were treated to that crisp, clear San Francisco sunshine that makes the Pacific Ocean sparkle like diamonds.

The Magic of the Black Sand Beach

If you’ve never been, Black Sands Beach is one of the most unique pockets of the California coast. The dark, charcoal-colored grains provide a high-contrast, moody backdrop that makes a white lace maternity gown or a flowy pastel dress absolutely pop.

Because this beach requires a bit of a hike down (and a workout on the way back up!), it remains a hidden gem. For Melanie and Ryan’s session, we practically had the whole beach to ourselves. This privacy allowed them to truly relax, soak in the moment, and celebrate the incredible journey of becoming parents.

The contrast of the dark cliffs and the deep sand against the bright winter sun created a literal glow around Melanie. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love being a San Francisco family photographer.

Why Winter is the Best Kept Secret

While summer in the Bay Area often brings “Karl the Fog,” winter offers:

  • Directional Light: The sun stays lower in the sky, providing that “Golden Hour” glow for much longer.
  • Fewer Crowds: You get the intimate, secluded vibe that is hard to find at places like Baker Beach or Ocean Beach in July.
  • Crisp Clarity: The air is cleaner after the rains, making the horizon line and the textures of the cliffs incredibly sharp.

Capture Your Own Journey

Watching Melanie and Ryan together, it was easy to see the excitement and love they already have for their little one. These sessions are about more than just the “bump”—they are about capturing the last few chapters of your story as a duo before you become a trio.

Engagements

There’s nothing quite like springtime in San Jose. For a few magical months, the rolling hills of Silicon Valley transform into a vibrant, almost surreal shade of green—lush, alive, and full of promise. It’s hands-down my favorite time of year to shoot, and if you’ve ever driven through the foothills in March or April, you […]
