In the ever-changing world of photography, sometimes you have to roll with the punches and make the most of what you’re given. That’s exactly what happened when Derek and Erica flew me into their temporary home state of Alaska for their Alaska engagement photos. We had only a day to work with, but we were determined to capture their love in the most breathtaking way possible.
Of course, we had hoped for a rain-free day. We strategically planned our session just before the start of the rainy season, thinking we were in the clear. But as luck would have it, the weather had other plans. It rained relentlessly for the entire 30 hours that I was in town. There was no way for me to stay longer, as it was the middle of busy season for me as a photographer. We had no choice but to make the best of what nature served us and Derek & Erica were the perfect couple to go-with-the-flow!
As we embarked on our engagement session in Palmer, the rain miraculously ceased and the clouds parted, revealing the majestic mountains in the distance. It was as if the heavens were aligning to gift us a brief break from the downpour. We took the opportunity and began documenting their love against the stunning backdrop (that was in a local neighbor’s backyard)!
But as we ventured to our second location, the rain returned with a vengeance. It seemed determined to dampen our spirits and drown out any hope of a sunset. However, Derek and Erica weren’t ones to back down from a challenge. With hearts full of love and determination, we fearlessly ventured into the rain, embracing the elements in all their glory.
In that moment, something truly magical happened. As the rain cascaded down upon us, the two danced in the rain like carefree kids. Derek and Erica held onto each other with an intensity that could rival a new crush, their love radiating through the misty air. It was a symphony of emotions, an ode to love in its purest form.
Despite the challenges that nature threw our way, the images we captured that day were nothing short of extraordinary. They told a story of resilience, of love that triumphed over adversity. It was a testament to the power of embracing the unexpected and finding beauty amidst the chaos.
As I boarded the plane the next morning, leaving behind the breathtaking landscape of Alaska, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of longing. I knew in my heart that this wouldn’t be my last trip to this gorgeous state. I longed to return, to capture more love stories against the backdrop of snow-capped mountains and pristine wilderness.

May of 2024, I had the incredible pleasure of photographing Sarah and Richie’s intimate elopement at the historic Santa Barbara Courthouse. This beautiful venue, nestled in one of my all-time favorite cities, provided the perfect setting for their love story. With its Spanish-Moorish architecture and lush gardens, the Santa Barbara Courthouse is a stunning backdrop […]
